Understanding pilling — and removing it gently

Pilling is not a flaw but a sign: pure cashmere is made of fine, short hairs, and at points of friction a few of them work loose.

Where pilling appears

Under the arms, at the sides, wherever bags or straps rub. After the first few wears it eases off noticeably.

How to take it off

Lay the piece flat on a table and draw a cashmere comb across the spot in one direction — without pressure. No razors, no electric lint removers: those cut into the knit.

Prevention

Give it a day of airing between two days of wear. That relaxes the fiber and reduces friction points.
